A Typical Session
My typical session lasts about 1-2 hours. A week prior to the session, I provide an email to my clients with detailed instructions on how to prepare for a successful shoot. In my experience, every baby is different in how they perceive and interact with their surroundings but there are best practices in being able to help the baby feel comfortable. Newborn sessions are normally done within 5-10 days after delivery (preemies are an exception). It’s best to contact me 24-48 hours after delivery.
I do not set a hard time stop for my sessions and will continue the session until we get the best possible shots of the baby as long as we can keep them comfortable.
Sessions are scheduled either in the mornings, afternoons (studio only) or evenings. I book 3-5 sessions a week so my dates/times do fill up. If you’d like a specific date/time, I recommend booking as early as possible.
After you contact me, I’ll be emailing you to get more information to get to know you and your family better and to find out what you’re looking for with a few quick questions so that I can best fulfill your needs.
For newborn sessions in my newborn photography studio located in Northern Virginia, I supply my props, wraps, accessories and baskets but you are welcome to bring something that is memorable to you (e.g. grandma’s quilt, mom’s old stuffed animal, memorable items from sports/hobbies). Additionally, I keep my studio at a comfortable temperature for the baby while also providing key necessities such as a nursing pillow, some toys for your toddlers, beverages, diapers/wipes in a changing table, and other comforting elements for both your family and your newborn.
Studio sessions are much more posed than my natural lifestyle sessions. This especially pertains to newborn studio sessions as you will often see with my images of newborns.
For on-location sessions in your home, a clean and uncluttered home with lots of natural light and a temperature-warm environment will result in beautiful pictures of your newborn. I love capturing the babies’ initial environments, such as the nursery and/or the master bedroom. Photography is about light, so please be aware that I will recommend that you have your session in my studio if the natural light in your home/rooms is insufficient (even if it’s due to the weather e.g. a cloudy day). Please note that I do not bring any of my accessories or props to on-location sessions.
On-location sessions are less posed than studio sessions. I keep an eye out for distracting elements (e.g. positioning, stray hairs, awkward hand placement, etc) but my goal is to keep each individual comfortable and confident to bring out their natural qualities.
You can expect a link to an online gallery of proofs 2-3 weeks after your session. Most families select their final images from the gallery of proofs in about 2-3 weeks. Once I have the final list of images, I professionally edit the images and deliver the final digital images within 2-3 weeks (printed media generally takes additional time).
I often share a sneak peak for the family on Facebook or Instagram within 48 hours of the session. Please let me know ahead of time if you do not want your images to be shared on social media. You are welcome and encouraged to tag and share these photos.
